Always having a 3rd eye, and a love of the Proms on BBC TV, I retrained as a PSC Cameraman in 2009 when the exposure to film cameras of every type in the workplace became too tempting. (Regional News was in the studio opposite to the Philharmonic)
I inadvertently found myself at the BBC Wood Norton Training Centre in 2009 and then joined the BBC Northwest Tonight News team for 6 months on a BBC Stepping Stones placement as a fully fledged news cameraman.
In 2009/10 as well as having daily broadcasts of my footage on regional news, I also filmed celebrities such as round the world yachts woman Ella McArthur, covered the UK Motocross championships in Liverpool and broadcast live on National BBC Breakfast News. One of my films was shown on National TV during the break of the BBC Philharmonic’s Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in July 2010.
I was very privileged to have filmed the opening sequence with Sir Andrew Davies of the BBC Symphony orchestra’s Prom at the Albert Hall in London in 2011 and shadowed the BBC Director, John Kirby.
After my stint at Regional News, and as part of my BBC remit, I was asked by the wonderful Projects Manager for the BBC Philharmonic Martin Maris to direct the Orchestra’s Family Concerts which I did very happily for 5 years. This led to other large scale projects, including the 250th anniversary concert of the Bridgewater canal, BBC Brass day, Radio Cumbria’s 40th anniversary and the IWM North’s ‘Services’ collaboration. In June 2016 I directed my BBC camera team for the Philharmonic’s presentation of the best of ’10 Pieces’ at the Guildhall in Preston, Media City Salford and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.
Directing work also took me to Dar es Salaam for the Dar Chorus and Orchestra in Tanzania, Africa for the Tanzanian conductor Raymond Hekima in November 2017. I had an 8 crew camera team to direct and train, which was very challenging in 34 degrees!
Having studied on the Conducting course at the RNCM and with my reputation for filming musicians preceding me, I’ve been asked on a number of occasions to join the Media team at the RNCM and was recently filming the RNCM/PARIS Conservetoire concert in their recent exchange programme. Hopefully more to come!
